As a nanny in Boston, you鈥檙e probably used to long hours, high-stress activities, and the physical demands of your job. You may not even realize that you need a little time to care for yourself until you鈥檙e exhausted. However, you can prevent nanny burnout by setting aside time for yourself to recharge with one of these suggested self-care activities.

Grab a beverage at Thinking Cup

When you鈥檙e a nanny, you often have to worry about the appetites of others before your own. Treat yourself by getting some coffee, pastries, or tea from one of Boston鈥檚 local cafes. is one of the most popular cafes in the city, but unlike others, it can offer a slightly quieter atmosphere. Pick up a pastry and a hazelnut latte from the Thinking Cup on Tremont Street, then take a stroll around Boston Common to clear your head. Or, stop by the location on Hanover Street and grab a chai latte and a scone. Get lucky with a seat by the window, and people watch while you enjoy your treats.

Take a free yoga class in the city

Find your zen with one of many free or inexpensive yoga classes in the city. There鈥檚 Brewery Yoga at Backlash Beer Company on Hampden Street, an outdoor Fireside Yoga at Farrington Memorial every month, and . If you live north of downtown, Marathon Sports in Melrose holds a class for free every other Sunday. At Moxley Park in Watertown, MedVadis Research hosts on Saturday mornings.

Relax with a library book

Boston Public Library is one of the most beautiful historic libraries in the country. When you need a little peace and quiet to calm your mind, take a stroll through BPL to admire the Renaissance-style architecture and the murals lining the walls. Or, find that book you haven鈥檛 had time to read, grab a seat in the Reading Room or outdoors by the fountain, and relax.

Get some fresh air

If you don鈥檛 have time for a vigorous workout, that鈥檚 okay. Simply going outside for a walk can be an incredible stress reliever. Stroll along the 3-mile Charles River Esplanade for a calming view of the water. Craving more greenery? Explore the Emerald Necklace system of parks, stopping in Arnold Arboretum or the zoo along the way. For a historic neighborhood walk where you can stop for a bite (and get a little extra workout), hike along Beacon Hill. Even if you鈥檙e a veteran of the city, you might discover some new favorite spots in these familiar places.

Have a dance party with the kids

Want to blow off some steam but don鈥檛 have time in your childcare schedule? Involve the kids! Forget the structured play activities and have a classic dance party. Put on some music and dance it out with the kids. Take their requests for songs and get out that extra energy. You can even turn it into a game where everyone must freeze with the music stops.

Unwind with some easy face masks

We all want a spa day to unwind, but sometimes that鈥檚 just not feasible 鈥 whether with your budget or your schedule (or both). But that doesn鈥檛 mean you can鈥檛 pull it off. Whip up some easy avocado face masks with the kids and pretend that you鈥檙e having a 鈥渟pa day鈥 at the house. (Just make sure it鈥檚 okay with the parents and that the kids don鈥檛 have allergies.)

All you need for one moisturizing mask is:

  • Half a ripe avocado

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 陆 teaspoon coconut oil

Mash or puree the avocado until it鈥檚 creamy, then blend in the rest of the ingredients. Apply to your face while avoiding your eyes. Add cucumbers to the eyes for an extra laugh.

While you鈥檙e waiting for the masks to work their magic, bring out the coloring books and get creative, or read a book together out loud. You can even put on some soft 鈥渟pa music鈥 and lounge on the couch 鈥 whatever floats your boat. After about 15 minutes, wipe off with a moist towel, and rinse your face with warm water.
